CRETINS / BLUT + EISEN- Split 7″ (Weird System, Germany, 1984)

“Dachau Disco” – what a title (as you know, Dachau is the name of a german village near Munich and notorious for being the location of one of the first nazi concentration camps). CRETINS wrote this song in 1979 and first released it on the legendary »HanNOver FunFunFun« compilation album, with different lyrics, that made rise the one or the other eyebrow (the lyrics were rewritten for this split 7″ – which causes a weird effect). Between the comp contribution and this split 7″, CRETINS released one much acclaimed record, the legendary »Samen im Darm« 7″ (translates as “Semen in the colon”). The song itself is excellent. Total scorcher!
On the flip, you’ll find BLUT & EISEN. To tell the truth, I’ve never really got into their stuff. Some of the band’s numerous comp contributions are okay, but the 1984 album is a bit of a drag. This one song is mighty good and original.

The CRETINS lyrics are over the top, even for today, the cold cynicism leaves one speechless. I must say that after so many years, I still don’t understand what they’re trying to say and it beats me why this is widely considered an antifascist song. Only because of the “let’s lynch nazis” phrasing towards the end? If somebody cares to translate the lyrics into english, you’ll find the lyrics on the backside of the sleeve. But then again, the weird ambivalence and play with words is what makes this interesting.

I’ve seen colored vinyl copies of this, as it’s often the case with Weird System releases (one of the best Punk labels from Germany).

Thanks for posting this! I always liked Blut+Eisen, though. Esp. their 2nd LP is pretty great.

Could you post the early version of Dachau Disco, for comparison? Never heard that comp.

I will definitely post the entire comp sooner or later. It’s a minor classic!

blut + eisen, i mean. by the cretins i only ever had the other 7″ which i agree is great. and i don’t see the stupidity – they just fuck you in the face, as good punk is prone to do.

Damn right! Wasn’t punk about irritation and controversity? Well, it’s all here in this post. I like both bands.

Possibly because I’m not hampered by understanding a single word of the lyrics, I really like the “sound” of the Cretins track.
