Following Martin’s example, I too simply post a well known debut by a world famous band (well, lets say it was the 2nd debut by the BUZZCOCKS, after the “Spiral Scratch” 7″). The BUZZCOCKS were, as you know, the inventors of the d-beat. Apart from that, they were one of my fave first generation Punk bands. “Orgasm Addict” is ze best song they ever wrote and pays tribute to the “habit that sticks”. You can see the cum stains on the front cover of my copy of this wonderful 7″.
Quote of the moment:
«What strikes me is the fact that in our society, art has become something which is related only to objects and not to individuals, or to life. That art is something which is specialized or which is done by experts who are artists. But couldn't everyone's life become a work of art? Why should the lamp or the house be an art object, but not our life?» (Michel Foucault)On heavy rotation:
An album full of diamonds and diamonds.Movie of the moment:
«Midnight in Paris» is not only the best Woody Allen movie in quite some time (although I must say that I loved «Matchpoint» for its cold bourgeois-brutality) – it can also be seen as a witty comment on the current retro-trend. And it's pure cinematic joy!Book of the moment:
It's a paradox: Blogs like this one disenchant the music that enchants their makers. The obscure, the magic, the mystery that was an integral part of popular music until a few years ago, has now been shattered completely. The internet and all its effect has torn down the boundary that used to separate the past from the present in the cultural production: Everything is only a few mouseclicks away, from music to art, fashion, design - you name it. The downside: Popular culture finally eats itself, is obsessed with its own past and thus creates nothing new. This is one of the main thesis of renowned music journalist Simon Reynolds' in his excellent book «Retromania. Pop culture's addiction to its own past». Reynold goes one step further and makes an interesting point saying that Punk itself was a reactionary cultural movement, dreaming of a world "without the Sgt Peppers album". A sometimes pretty academic, well written, resourceful and very much recommended book!Blogroll

FIRST! (lol!)
Seriously the best band. I don’t care if I look like a poser, the “Singles Going Steady” compilation is FLAWLESS!!!
[Reply]
P.S.: Kawakami compiled a cdr (or tape?) for people that made some short rounds…all bands such as th’ Cock playing proto d-beat (some of the bands were a far stretch). “Whatever” (the particular song in question) is one of my fave songs by them too!

The self released Spiral Scratch cum first with Devoto though
. Flawless.

Erich, I think I end up in your spam e-mail. I am still trying to send you some vinyl! Severance Package (ex-Vomit Launch/special forces/black fork) + Stun Guns (ex- Broken Talent/Lethal Yellow). Need your address & yes the Buzzcocks are wonderful always.
[Reply]
My favourite band of all time (well, along with Motorhead, of course!)
[Reply]
Yes, the Buzzcocks invented D-beat. They also invented powerviolence, splattercore, herpes-thrash and the fax machine. WORD TO YOUR MOTHER!!
[Reply]
@Lackeyland, why don’t I send you my address and you can send me free records.
Damn Erich, not much writting this time, but what a fucking smasher. Took me back. If there were a list of hits to come out of early punk, “Orgasm Addict”, would have to be on it. Right up there XRay Specs’ “I’m a Poseur”, (probably better). Definitely KTEL worthy. Thanx man. This song choice wouldn’t have anything to do with the current stae of your love life? Oh, yeah, bash me in the head for being stupid, but has anyone mentioned the name of the Buzzcocks song that is credited a the first D-Beat tune (I think Peter hinted at it at one time). Thanx again.

Excellent post as usual. With Girth’s (actually Garth hehe) bonking bass style standing out. I’m sure glad I still own this!

The first “d-beat” song was “You Tear Up Me Bum”! Not that wasn’t even off the cuff, but it was out me arse! ; )

DICKIES and BUZZCOCKS are the best pop-punk bands EVER!!!!!!

I wrote about it here Justin:

Hi Circle-Eh – there is no membership available. Just enjoy what you find and if you like the work I’m doing, you donate some cash once a year, when I collect money for the site maintenance.
@ Lackeyeland: Your mail indeed got caught in the spam. Will get in touch with you later this evening. I’m totally snowed under here, both metaphorically and weatherwise.

Thanx Peter, must have missed that when I got caught up in the Dutch sleeve thing.
[Reply]
Dutch sleeve? Is there a Buzzcocks 7″ with a dutch sleeve?
[Reply]
Justin, send you address through http://www.shutuprecords.com and I will send you a record!
[Reply]
incredibly great 7″…but the thing i always liked about this as well was the fantastic cover art – very classy stuff. Still kicking myself for not buying the bootleg t-shirts with the cover print that a guy was selling when the ‘Cocks came to Australia all those years ago…ach ach. When you think about it the ‘cocks had the graphic thing down on pretty much all their releases…
[Reply]
whats d-beat? def leppard bein z-beat and anvil bein a-beat they called it even but leaning way more towards the anvil side huh?
