SONS OF ISHMAEL- Hayseed Hardcore 7″EP (Death Enema Records, Canada, 1985)

SONS OF ISHMAEL from Ontario / Canada came out of the blue for me with this EP. The band later released a bunch of other records, of which especially the “Pariah MArtyr demands a Sacrifice” (Mini-)LP was highly anticipated, but when I went through them recently, they all sounded rather pale. Not this one: “Hayseed Hardcore” is a bonafide meat & potatoes Hardcore Thrash classic! Perfect in sound and composition, it rages from alpha to omega, without a second of annoyance! Even though there’s already that kind of irony and humor thrown in which would become typical for some of the 2nd generation HC bands, it’s still serious enough to be taken seriously. Imagine NEOS and TH’INBRED blended together and what you get is pretty much this scorcher!
Pictured is the the first pressing of 500. The later pressing had a different cover in various colors.
Download the entire “Hayseed Hardcore” EP here as one .zip file.

Fuckshitupism deluxe.

Yeah this is the firs press. I had it too but sold it of course ha ha
. My old band where supposed to do a split with them but it ended up in two 12″ EP’s instead. Can’t say I cared much for this band.

Funny, I was just listening to the Sons Of Ishmael record last week and my conclusion was the same as yours. Hayseed Hardcore still rips. The LP is a bit tired.

Yeah, DLO – the LP is lacking the freshness of this, plus it’s just too long and ambitious.

This one has always been a favourite of mine since a penpal taped it for me about 23 years ago. Really looking forward to hearing the rip as usual. I’m the same with the LP. Was so looking forward to it but was a big let down. Maybe I’ll go back and give it another go. Saw them live, too, back in 1990 or so. Decent, but a bit too “wacky,” if you know what I mean.

I found this one in a box of $1 7”s along with Exit Stance, Ataque Frontal, Asta Kask and a few other rippers. Mine has an orange cover. Hey, Erich, you should do a post of $1 or less record finds.

Consider this a “1$ or less records find” – I got it for free when it came out. Ataque Frontal – that one might get posted soon, it’s really good (but it cost like 3 $).
PS: Frank: More Metal coming. Don’t worry!

Pretty cool. I’m glad this isn’t an LP, but as a shorter recording, it definitely works for me. Between this and Sacrifice, I guess you’re in a bit of a Canadian mood.
Have you had a chance to hear the new Sacrifice LP? I know you generally don’t do new metal albums, but it’s actually quite good, all things considered. It’s as if they never changed their style after Forward to Termination (a big favorite of mine,) and the production isn’t flat and “modern.”

I sure do new Metal albums, WTT. Metal is timeless. All good kitsch is. Never cared for Sacrifice that much after the first. In fact – I didn’t like the first one that much when it came out and I think it sounds much better (rawer!) now than it did back then. Guess I’ll have to keep my eyes open for the two you mentioned.

thank you erich downloading Sacrifice right now. the one thing that pisses me off about new so called metalheads is when they say “oh i am a metalhead” and when you ask them what bands they like they say “korn and metallica.” i think there is still good metal but i might need some help finding it. hey erich how do you feel about black metal? crasy motherfuckers!

Glad to see you like The Ones I Condemn, Erich! I always thought Sacrifice never got their due…the first song on Forward to Termination hit me like a ton of bricks when I first heard it, and I’ve loved them ever since.
The only problem with the new album imo is that the vocalist’s voice hasn’t aged perfectly; the vocals on FtT are totally unique and over the top!
And more on topic: Governors of Death is a great song title.

Thanks,

Good to see roswell47 posting here. He made me a tape of every obscure or not outtake and early demo stuff. Thanks roswell47.
I especially love the mix of this record. The first song is so loud, then everything else is of lesser volume. The best part though is the mix of ‘another groovy tune’. Only the drum rolls in the mix. Actually, you can hear more of it in headphones than I previously noticed playing on my HiFi.
