Good bad Music for bad, bad Times! / AVENGERS- s/t 12″EP (White Noise Records, USA, 1979)

AVENGERS- s/t 12″EP (White Noise Records, USA, 1979)

IMG_0498IMG_0500Released shortly after the breakup of AVENGERS, this 12″ features one über-great, 2 regularly great and one shit track. “American in me” and “White Nigger” are great, “U Oh!!” is horrible and “Corpus Christ” is one of my fave AVENGERS songs. Of course, it is produced by Geza X, whereas the other 3 are kaputt-mixed by Steve Jones (Sex Pistols), or as it says on the back cover, “Mr. Steve Jones”.

This has never been re-released in its original mix (to my knowledge). The remixed versions on the LP are even worse than these. And here are the lyrics for “Corpus Christi”, so you can sing along (love that “Corpse from the Cross”-bit):

«In The beginning there was a void except for the written word
I was born in such foolish times my guilt is guaranteed
Now I don’t want to burn in hell, John told me that I would
Unless I went down to the water my sins purged in his holy blood

See how they run
Sheep to the fold
See how they fall
Corpse from the Cross

Now I’ve got my bleeding heart and I wear my crown of thorns
and argue with the old men about the tapestry was torn
I ‘ve got to sacrafice my ego it’s such a small price to pay
I’m waiting for the resurrection. Gonna find out what christ would say

See how they run
Sheep to the fold
See how they fall
Corpse from the Cross

See how they run
Sheep to the fold
See how they fall
Corpse from the Cross

Read another bible story I’ve got to find the truth
Sending loads of telegrams to God prove my faith is absolute
Going down down on my knees and pray maybe I’ll buy a talisman
Somethings got to save me
On the Judgement Day

See how they run
Sheep to the fold
See how they fall
Corpse from the Cross

See how they run
Sheep to the fold
See how they fall
Corpse from the Cross»

Wow, it is indeed waaaay better than the LP/CD versions. I wonder how they managed to shit all over it like this. By the way, congrats, your vinyl rips are getting better and better. You should give us a tutorial one of these days.

Thanks much. Corpus Christi is my favourite Avengers song and don’t think I ever heard the original Geza X production. Sounds even better as I expected!

Never understoood why my album cover for this is blue, not the yellow I always see elsewhere. The versions on the LP were before they went down to LA, rerecorded the vocals and remixed to make this 12″. One of my fav 12″s along with Who What When Where Why and (GI)!

I have the Avengers compilation vinyl (CD presents), and yeah, I had never heard that Corpus Christi song; when I flipped the record and heard that one, I just played it like 5 times in a row. It’s just one of those melodies you can’t get out of your head. The following song on that LP (Fuck you- live-) is also another highlight.

I agree with the comments here, it sounds WAY better than on that compilation.

Sweet record. Stand out track for me is The American in me. Corpus Christi is still one of the best songs they’ve made. Such a brilliant chorus. KILLER!

Hey Erich, both the music and the writing on your blog are still great, but i’ve got to thank you for something else: You brought my attention to Werner Herzog’s book. I’ve bought it. I’ve read it. And i love it!

I don’t mind the music so much. In fact I hate all music. But I will continue to read the recommendations section of the blog. ;-)

Good to hear, Felix! I often think, I should start writing in german and include books and movies, but then again, being the old operaist I am, I can’t but loath work and whatever keeps me from pleasures of the flesh.
