Quote of the moment:
«What strikes me is the fact that in our society, art has become something which is related only to objects and not to individuals, or to life. That art is something which is specialized or which is done by experts who are artists. But couldn't everyone's life become a work of art? Why should the lamp or the house be an art object, but not our life?» (Michel Foucault)On heavy rotation:
An album full of diamonds and diamonds.Movie of the moment:
«Midnight in Paris» is not only the best Woody Allen movie in quite some time (although I must say that I loved «Matchpoint» for its cold bourgeois-brutality) – it can also be seen as a witty comment on the current retro-trend. And it's pure cinematic joy!Book of the moment:
It's a paradox: Blogs like this one disenchant the music that enchants their makers. The obscure, the magic, the mystery that was an integral part of popular music until a few years ago, has now been shattered completely. The internet and all its effect has torn down the boundary that used to separate the past from the present in the cultural production: Everything is only a few mouseclicks away, from music to art, fashion, design - you name it. The downside: Popular culture finally eats itself, is obsessed with its own past and thus creates nothing new. This is one of the main thesis of renowned music journalist Simon Reynolds' in his excellent book «Retromania. Pop culture's addiction to its own past». Reynold goes one step further and makes an interesting point saying that Punk itself was a reactionary cultural movement, dreaming of a world "without the Sgt Peppers album". A sometimes pretty academic, well written, resourceful and very much recommended book!Blogroll

AC/DC was the first band I discovered on my own and they are still one of my faves. Everything up to and including Back In Black is perfect. After Back In Black, there are hits and misses.

Finally some good music, that it´s a long way to the top video is killer!
Best band ever.

Arena rock! haha

“After Back In Black, there are hits and misses.”
Nope, everything they have released is 10/10.
[Reply]
I don’t think so, Pär, but you know that, haha. I recently met a guy who saw AC/DC with Bon Scott several times from 1977-1979. I felt the serious urge to beat him up.
[Reply]
YOU – ARE- THE – BEST!
[Reply]
Haha, you should have done that. I once worked with a guy that saw the Black Sabbath-AC/DC tour in 78. I hated him.
[Reply]
You should have killed him, Pär, haha. BTW: Black Sabbath hated AC/DC too on that tour, from what you can read. Didn’t they give them the boot when in Sweden?
[Reply]
“arena rock”?? this?? are you out of your mind – this is ROCK’n'ROLL at the edge of Punk!!!!!
[Reply]
I saw these guys back in ’84 and the set still was about 75% Bon Scott era stuff. AC/DC was a redneck / jock band–a punker in the US would have gotten funny looks if they admitted to liking them.
[Reply]
ROCK AND FUCKING ROLL
[Reply]
AC/DC sucked the big one in 84, MrPoopy. Just watch these videos, especially number 2 and 3, and then tell me again this was a redneck band, haha. The 2nd German AC/DC 7″ bore a nifty “Punk”-sticker on front – in 1976. Do your homework!

Hey cockroach, I always found their music “cliché”, I still have seen them live and bought their tapes as a kid, and it’s still good to me, but a bit too “prémédité”.
Get could get their hairs longer! héhé
[Reply]
They* could…
[Reply]
Well, Olivier – tell me one band that sounded even remotely like AC/DC up to, say, 1982. They were the original – the others were the cliché.
[Reply]
Admin, they were cliché by their own, always the same old, but still great working, formula – “prémédité” like I said, but not bad.
And to tell the truth, the worst like the best about AC/DC is their fans!
[Reply]
They were okay in the late ’70′s…and then…yawn.
[Reply]
Hey, I always liked the early stuff and had all their records up to “Back In Black”, but their fans were douchebags and I still know guys my age who won’t listen to that band. You mean to say you’ve never seen “Heavy Metal Parking Lot”? Same sort of crowd for AC/DC, believe me!

This guy was pretty cool, though:

Sure, the fans … but then again …. ever been to a Hardcore show?
[Reply]
AC/DC was more Punk than all punk and more metal than all metal… And all this in a bluesy background.
If someone described a band with these words….
YES ITS THE BEST BAND IN THE FUCKING WORLD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Bon Scott we miss you so much man…………..
[Reply]
“Sure, the fans … but then again …. ever been to a Hardcore show?” héhé, you got me here.
[Reply]
I like the old Screeching Weasel more than AC/DC, and I don’t care.
[Reply]
I was referring to the fans. I’d say the odds of a Punk-looking guy circa 1985 getting hassled at an AC/DC show were significantly greater than at a Hardcore show! You’d be a mohawk lost in a sea of mullets.
[Reply]
AC/DC had the best fans back in the 80s if you aks me, no rednecks, no jocks no macho bullshit attitude guys. AC/DC and Thin Lizzy were always, and probably still is, no 1 for those guys.
[Reply]
..still think that after Bon drank himself to death, the band should have changed it’s name. It’s just not the same band without Bon (ex. Dead Kennedys without Jello) Although Brian J. on Back In Black (and the tune Thunderstruck) really shows he is a one of a kind incredible singer.
As far as the fans, there must be a difference between European and American ACDC fans. “A sea of mullets” is a pretty good description. No better or worse though than any other group of fans. I wonder if anyone ever gobbed on ACDC?
[Reply]
I bought AC/DCs High Voltage and Let There Be Rock when they came out but never liked them as a whole and I wanted all the tracks to be as great as Let There Be Rock.
[Reply]
I’d rather listen to THEM.
[Reply]
Interesting discussion…here in Australia during the 80′s AC/DC were always lumped in with the ‘Aussie yobbo’ phenomenon ala ‘pub rock’ (singlets & beer) – a sea of mullets is a good description! While I always appreciated the grunt & power behind their music, the boogie-type elements always made me cringe & the whole ‘wine, women & song’ theme got tired pretty early….but then again they were a rock band, & they were the themes of the day. Fast forward to AC/DC now & Brian Jonson bashing out the same themes in schoolboy humour & innuendo is just embarrasing…yeccchhh! But back to their place in history, funny how here they were basically ignored here cos they were just that ‘pisshead yobbo rock band’, & then I find out that their early gigs in the UK were attended by members of Damned, Pistols & they have been cited as an influence on some of the early UK punk bands…Bon Scott in a dress is pushing the boundaries of the times pretty far also!
[Reply]
AC/DC will be playing Oklahoma City soon but tickets are over $100 so I doubt I’ll be seeing them unless I can score some free tix (could happen..). How much do they get paid per show?
[Reply]
AC/DC could charge $1000 and it wolud be worth it!
[Reply]
Well done, in the late 70′s any damned German AC/DC supporter liked to beat up every single Punk in general, especially when they were strength in numbers.
I know, it has nothing to do with the skills of the band, …but umh, it wasn’t fun, when you was small Punk kid and 10 big bodybuilding guys with moustaches crossing your way…
