MOBS- Diabolism 7″EP (Noise Room Records, Japan, 1984)

mobs_frontmobs_backmobs_inner1mobs_inner2img_0328One of the greatest EP from Japan comes from MOBS. Although this is pretty poorly recorded, the evilism is striking. Very much in the vein of GISM and the the likes, these kinda heavy, gloomy tracks are breeding discomfort and aggression. Wicked! What’s so typical for japanese Hardcore is the strange mixture of total frenzy and really melodic short guitar tunes, creating a sickly sweet aura. Dude, I love that kind of shit!

MOBS also released another EP and one LP, but that stuff is nowhere near the glory of this.

As a special bonus and to make up for the lack of words here, I’m also including the MOBS contribution to the mandatory and quintessential HARDCORE UNLAWFUL ASSEMBLY compilation LP from the same year. These songs here were originally a demo tape, recorded in 1983, maybe that’s why the comp tracks sound so much better. As great as the EP is, these two tracks destroy everything. Some of the ugliest, most evilistic stuff ever recorded. The vocals are so effective, it’s frightening.

As you can see, there’s a song called “Stead fast” listed on the covers tracklist, but it’s missing on the vinyl.

Great stuff! The tracks on the Hardcore Unlawful Assembly comp just fucking destroy. I actually have a tape of the 7″ session which includes the one track that’s missing from the record.

Evilism is a good word. This is fun stuff. I always liked Japanese hardcore like this. There seems to be a certain amount of commonality between bands like this and early “black metal.”

Also, that Razzia LP is extremely good! Some parts remind me a bit of a combination of Dead Kennedys and some strange post-punk.

I must say, I know very little about German punk and Hardcore, but bands like Vorkriegsphase, Inferno, and Razzia are fantastic!

If you like HC Punk from Germany, you should search the blog for some more quality stuff, like ABWÄRTS, KFC and CHAOS Z (which are twisted in a twisted way). I was planning on posting some more great stuff from Germany soon. Maybe, if I’m in the mood, I’ll do that very soon.

Thought there were four Mobs EPs, but only the first two (this and ‘Projection of astral body’) were punk. Only later EP I can find info for online is ’86′s ‘Gypsy on journey,’ so perhaps I’m imagining the fourth, or maybe it’s the 12″ I’m thinking of…been a long time since I ever thought about this stuff!

As far as I know, they only have released 3 EPs and 1 LP titled “Ressurection”.

Their first 2 EPs sound similar to the Japanese metallic punk of the days (GASMASK, ANTI-SEPTIC…).

The “Gypsy on journey” 7″ isn’t that bad, pretty much in the mid-80′s GASTUNK vein. Their LP, also from ’86, sounds like that too.

As you can hear, KUP, the first EP doesn’t sound too much like Anti-Septic. It’s a total GISM / ZOUO worship.

I could go on and on like a kid who got a whole cake to himself, but you know what you did was way above and beyond cool. Can’t thank you enough, but I will bother you with the details of each record at a later date. Thanx again man.
