DAYGLO ABORTIONS- Unreleased 7″EP (Canada, 1982)

We’ve had a bit of a Metal thing going on here the last couple of weeks, so what could be better than keepin’ on surfing the same wave a bit longer, yet going Punk? The heaviest Punk band in the world: Canada’s DAYGLO ABORTIONS.
I got the demo from one of my penpals from Canada in the 80s (Jamie was his name, if memory serves). As you can see, the year of the recording couldn’t be verified, but I think it’s probable. [Edit: Read the comments section]. The first LP (“Out of the Womb”) was recorded in 1981 and the a-side of the followup (“Feed U.S.A. Fetus”) in 1985 and these songs do sound like something inbetween. As far as I remember, this tape was never officially released, it only served as a – yeah, a demo tape, to find the DAYGLOS a new label [Edit: Read the comments section]. (the first LP was selfproduced). It worked and FRINGE picked them up in 1985, as we all know.
What you you get to hear are rough and very aggressive earlier versions of some of the songs we learned to love, like “Bedtime Story” or “Proud to be a Canadian”. I’m not too familiar with what the DAYGLOWS released after the 2nd LP, but I think all of these songs appeared on later releases. A great document of one of the most exciting bands to ever grace this world with its presence.
If you happen to have more info, please share, will you. In the meantime, enjoy the FRENZY of the DAYGLOW ABORTIONS.

aha must have come from my buddy Jamie Fulton. this is the Metropole Session produced by Scott Henderson (also did 2nd Neos 7″) in 1982. it was planned to be a 7″ EP, but later abandoned. you guys are very lucky to have it leaked, as back in Vic its more or less been under lock and key! two songs were remixed and featured in our CD’s for the All Your Ears Can Hear, Underground Music in Victoria 1978-84 book.
any old Victoria scene related questions? just ask!

Hey Erich- the tape did indeed come from me about 20 years ago. I got it from Scott Henderson in 1986 or 87 as Scott worked with me at the time and knew of my unhealthy obsession of most things metal and punk. I don’t recall him referring to it as an unreleased EP at the time but perhaps he had forgotten himself. “Whiter Than Hitler” and “Let’s Go Rape The Cunt Brain” (the bands ode to Brooke Shields and her vapid Jordache jeans commercials at the time) remain otherwise unreleased to this day. “Nuclear Supremacy” would later appear (albeit in an inferior rerecorded version) on the “Little Man In the Canoe” album. Great to hear it again after all these years…love the bass tone on it. Keep up the great work on the blog…it’s always a pleasure to see what you’ve posted next. Cheers, Jamie. PS…you still owe me an Infest LP (ha ha).

This stuff is great! But four of these tracks (same recordings!) actually were released back in 83-84, on the Medium Raw compilation tape put out by the Victoria chapter of BYO. A great comp, but alas, I sold it a while ago. It also had stuff by the (pre-Nomeansno) Infamous Scientists, Jerk Ward (even younger and crazier than the Neos!), Red Tide, a couple of great tunes by a band called Chronic Submission, and some more experimental stuff. BTW, where did they steal that intro to Nuclear Supremacy from? I’m sure I’ve heard it before (Mahavishnu?)…

That’s what I love about the blog: Almost every gets solved! Thanks much Niels. I think I have or used to have that tape. I recently read something about it on the net; it’s pretty hard to come by.

Wow! Nice to see all this info rolling in. I’ve never seen the BYO comp before and I’ve been doing the records store thing in Victoria for 24+ years…you learn something new every day. Which tunes were on that? As for the posting of it…I never had any instructions that it was for my ears only when I got it from Scott so I’m totally cool with it personally not that it’s mine to say so. About the Infest…I’m just giving you a hard time Erich. I sent you money years ago for copies of the Stikky-”Cuddle” EP to sell in the store, but you were out of them by the time you got the money so you said you’d send me the Infest- “Slave” when it was done instead…never did see it though. In my laziness I never did pursue it so my loss. I ordered the special edition of the Fear of God- “Zeitgeist” vinyl from you many years later sending you cash for that too so obviously there’s no hard feelings. I’m just giving you the gears. All the best and keep up the awesome work on the blog, Jamie.

Both “Let’s Go Rape…” and “Whiter Than Hitler” appeared coupled as a hidden bonus track on the 1997 version of the “Feed us…” CD on God Records (but not on the original Fringe CD). “Let’s Go Rape” is titled “Rape, Kill” on it, though. The versions are the same except they were remixed, less reverb, more guitar. Now i know where they came from ! Thanks a lot Erich !
