For me, the ultimate proto-Slayer solo moment is the end of Priest’s song “Running Wild”, especially the version on the first live LP. I certainly wouldn’t discount that influence on Slayer solos, both in terms of a noisier, more dissonant, whammy-bar-heavy style, and even in guitar tone (and on the band in general.) I’m interested in a possible Discharge influence because of the atmosphere the solos generate, and because they are much more consistently noisy, dissonant, chaotic etc. than Priest solos, or any other NWOBHM solos I’ve encountered so far.

Thanks Erich, I actually have never heard these mixes before. I saw Slayer the first time in 1984 @ Lamours in Brooklyn. The one thing that always struck me was the complete fan frenzy that they could whip up like no other band. I remember standing outside waiting to get in and chanting Slayer repeatedly while beer bottles crashed against the wall over head. At one point about 30 people stopped a bus full of unknowing commuters and began shaking it from side to side while chanting you know what hahaha.
