San Diego’s masters of Hardcore-Punk-Metal: BATTALION OF SAINTS. The 7″ version of “Second Coming” (also to be found on the LP of the same title, but in a different version) has got to be one of the high points of American Hardcore. Screaming vocals, a three-chords onslaught and fast paced, barely under control drumming. Awesomest. Unearthly. For more from and on BATTALION OF SAINTS go here and here. And I will go back to bed now to cure the flu. Listening to these songs helped.
Quote of the moment:
«What strikes me is the fact that in our society, art has become something which is related only to objects and not to individuals, or to life. That art is something which is specialized or which is done by experts who are artists. But couldn't everyone's life become a work of art? Why should the lamp or the house be an art object, but not our life?» (Michel Foucault)On heavy rotation:
An album full of diamonds and diamonds.Movie of the moment:
«Midnight in Paris» is not only the best Woody Allen movie in quite some time (although I must say that I loved «Matchpoint» for its cold bourgeois-brutality) – it can also be seen as a witty comment on the current retro-trend. And it's pure cinematic joy!Book of the moment:
It's a paradox: Blogs like this one disenchant the music that enchants their makers. The obscure, the magic, the mystery that was an integral part of popular music until a few years ago, has now been shattered completely. The internet and all its effect has torn down the boundary that used to separate the past from the present in the cultural production: Everything is only a few mouseclicks away, from music to art, fashion, design - you name it. The downside: Popular culture finally eats itself, is obsessed with its own past and thus creates nothing new. This is one of the main thesis of renowned music journalist Simon Reynolds' in his excellent book «Retromania. Pop culture's addiction to its own past». Reynold goes one step further and makes an interesting point saying that Punk itself was a reactionary cultural movement, dreaming of a world "without the Sgt Peppers album". A sometimes pretty academic, well written, resourceful and very much recommended book!Blogroll

THIS RAGES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I’ve got my pedantic head on, so…Battalion Of Saints were from San Diego rather than L.A. Fantastic stuff though, no matter where they’re from!

This one is killer. I love these Motorhead-obsessed punk/hardcore bands. Hell, I even like Beowulf and their tracks on the Welcome to Venice comp. Not to nitpick, but I thought BoS were from San Diego?

L.A.? Who said L.A.?
[Reply]
Exceptional band like you said. Must say that I never cared to buy this single because I thought these were the same songs like on the LP. I’m pretty much shocked now. Imagine the whole LP had this rawness & speed.
[Reply]
Short and sweet. Didn’t like this way back when for some reason. Sounds a lot better when you put it out there.
Erich feeling alright=NWOBHM
Erich feeling sick=Hardcore
Hope you get to feeling better.

Always loved these versions better than the album. This just fucking kicks ass!!! San Diego is where they are from.

BOS were an awesome band to see live and I’m not talking about the 90s version, i’m talking about BOS from 82-84!

One of the first HC 7″ I ever bought and what a fine disk it was. That so-called “best of” put out by Mystic had their 1982 demo on the A-side, which is of similar intensity. Sound quality isn’t that great as I recall but I remember playing the shit out of those songs when it came out.

Another GREAT 7″ that you are surprised to find is on Mystic. That label was the street sweeper of punk labels- fire off 100 records and I suppose one of them will knock you out. Although I really like this version of Second Coming, I think the LP is perfect the way it is- blazing from start to finish.

Hi Erich! I’ve been downloading some great stuff from your blog the last couple of weeks (with shotgun solution probably being my favourite post. what a rager that ep is!) and i just wanted to say thanks for all the awesome bands you’re posting and the effort you put into every release you write about.
I honestly have never been that much into BOS. They’ve got some grat songs but i think it’s their sound in itself that’s their real achievement. BOS (AD) 1996 cd Cuts isn’t bad, by the way. Like four or so songs on that cd is amazing, in my opinion.
Anyways, get better and thanks once more!

been looking for this for a long ass time. thanks eric. if it wasn’t for your blog i wouldn’t know half the bands i do now.

Unlike so many others I thought Second Coming was a huge disappointment. Too clean, too sterile. If it sounded like this or the Fighting Boys 12″ it would’ve been my cup of tea.

Hey this is pretty good. The weird thing is that when I was growing up I had this inexplicable prejudice against Taaang records, I think because they put out those awful mighty mighty bosstones records.
Unfortunately I’ve always associated this band with that label and didn’t listen them (or SSD!) until just now. I even skipped the POison IDea releases from Taang! How stupid I was. Thanks for showing me the error of my ways….

SWEEET!! another one of my records that you have ripped for me, Thanks! Love your website!

I agree with Peter-KBD and others that this version is better than the LP version, and the Second Coming LP is too clean–but it still kicks ass. Had I not heard this 7 inch version or the Fighting Boys EP, I wouldn’t be nitpicking. My Mind’s Diseased—fucking classic!

I bought this in late 1984 and thought it was great! I saw Battalion of Saints in January of 1985 and they were so good that I went out and bought the Second Coming LP the next day, as great as an album that is, I was disappointed that it didn’t sound more like this 7″!
[Reply]
Just listened to the live set on their Rock in Peace LP for the first time. 110% energy from start to finish, and the performance of Second Coming may be even better than the one on this 7″!
