MENTAL DECAY- s/t 7″EP (Buy Our Records, USA, 1984)

When I read Joe’s excellent New Jersey Special, I suddenly remembered MENTAL DECAY. I used to play the shit out of this EP, but as it goes, I must have gotten tired of it. Now that I played for the maybe first time in twenty years, it totally blew me away. And I was proven that I must have indeed loved this a great deal – I knew every song by heart, and even some of the lyrics had been buried somewhere in my head and it only took one spin to reactivate memory. So great, so aggressive, fast and pissed yet skilled and funny – let’s make this a happy double-posting day!

  3. It took me a while to realize why I recognized the band name, but it hit me when I listened to it. Someone taped this to me when I was a tiny punk (14-15 years old) and I used to listen to it on my Walkman all the time. Have to see if I can find that tape now to see what else is on it. Thanks Erich!

I just couldn’t ever get into this EP. Maybe I’ll look it out & give it another try & maybe discover the magic that Erich has refound. I always found it ultra-generic, to be honest. I’m willing to be proved wrong, though!

  6. @ Johnny Air Guitar (hahhaha): I ADMIRE Darkthrone’s BM albums. Rarely has there been unleashed so much MALICE upon mankind. and the lyrics to the song “transilvanian hunger” are perfect. totally, totally, totally love this stuff, although it hasn’t been too long since I discovered it. the whole nazi bullshit that used to surround the band when it was originally released had totally put me off. now, in retrospect, I can only fall onto my knees and light a black candle for them. hail satan.

Their (darkthrone) best record, IMO, is A Blaze in the Northern Sky.

Yeah, they’re not nazis, just typical metalheads (haha).

Glad you posted this. Don’t think I’ve heard it though I had other records on that label. As for Darkthrone I hear they are now Bolsheviks so everyone put on a big smiley face.

To me (TO ME , ok guys ?) MENTAL DECAY is fairly generic thrash/punk . Not too exciting…
