"white Nigger" is one of my all time favorite punk anthems of this era. I think I might go out on a line and say that the Avengers are one of the best, if not the best, punk band of this era. As far as the "far leftist" lyrics and illusions of grandeur, isn't that part of the allure of youth music?

I got to hang out with Penelope for a few minutes in San Diego when they did their reunion a few years ago. She was very nice and friendly with me and is still very cute.

So busy in my world right now, I'm really glad I stopped here to check things out. Very cool post Erich, especially on the heels of your comment on mine. Whenever I do one I try to look around the other blogs and see what else is available from the same band. Sadly the Avengers were not well represented in the blog world and I don't do P2P so I don't know what's available there. Thank you so much for this addition and especially your thoughts on the band. I hope JB up there wasn't talking about me as far as paying outrageous prices for records and then posting them. I have never paid more than about $15 for any music I own. I might pay that much though for that SAS 7" you have though Erich :D

Lucy: The idea of a "new man" (and let's for a second think that that's what the Avengers are singing about) seems to be a very common topos in context of revolutionary ideologies and the french philosophers of enlightenment set the pace and direction of what was to follow. The worst that I know of (apart from the fascist conceptions) can be found in Che Guevara's books. Real scary stuff.
What I still like about the Avengers text is the sparkling megalomania. In retrospect one often seems to forget how much the early years of any forceful, aggressive and explosive youth movement gives its participants illusions of grandeur. As pitiful as this may seem 30 years later, in this last of the 20th century youth movements - there's still something about it that I find catching and compelling, like the playing through of different ideologies, identities and such, as here.

And as for giving me a big head: I already have that. And the other sounds good too.
