DISFORIA- Compilation Tape (Disforia, Italy, 1983)

This post has been made possible by Papalla from Torino / Italy. Thanks so much, Papalla! The picture shows DECLINO live and first appeared in Stiv’s T.V.O.R. fanzine, stolen from audiodrome.it

What we have here is one of the most ferocious and wild compilations I’ve heard in my life. DISFORIA was a fanzine that lasted from 1982 to 1984, edited by Tax of NEGAZIONE. In 1983, the makers decided to compile the emerging and blossoming Hardcore scene in (mainly) the North of Italy. So this cassette was the result: 38 tracks by 7 bands.
The tape blasts off with BLUE VOMIT (members of IFIXTCHENTCHEN and NERORGASMO). What can I say?! This kind of music kicks me still so hard it’s unreal. Fast, extremely aggressive, in your face and with a very original twist; basically the same twist that made Hardcore from Italy so special. There’s a BLUE VOMIT CD which has everything the band ever recorded, but it’s currently out of print.
Next up are KOLLETTIVO, with their demo of which one song was also featured on the essential PAPI QUEENS REICHSKANZLERS, PRESIDENNTI 7″ comp. 9 songs of hatred and frustration. I remember when I was in Italy with my parents (the annual summer holiday terror), I saw a bunch of Punx in Rimini in 1980. Extremely ripped cloth, mohawks that had fallen asleep on their heads. They were spitting at tourists and growling unarticulated sounds. For some reason, I always associated KOLLETTIVO with this picture, haha.
Then DECLINO rip shit up. I mean, honestly, I’ve never heard a band that was capable of forging such a sound, with so many different emotional patterns in it. So amazing I could cry.
C.B.A. give us the possibility to catch some breath,  and then 5. BRACCIO (members of NEGAZIONE and CONTRAZIONE) tear down your apartment brick by brick. Unreal, totally unreal. “Ricambio umano” is not of this earth.
KINA PUNK from Aosta, a wonderful spot when you’re into mountains, hiking and such, surprised me quite a bit! I’ve seen them live a couple times in the mid 80s, when they had shortened the band name to just KINA. By that time, they also had begun to slowly alter their sound. Still hectic outbursts of manic Thrash,  but already a very poppish appeal thrown in on occassion. One extraordinary band – everything they touched turned into gold, they just had the magic fingers.
Then we have D.D.T. of which I know nothing, but these songs are no let down, “Gioco” and “Terrore” being my faves. The tape ends with one song each from four of the other bands.

Download DISFORIA as one .zip file, encoded with 192 KB/sec. Massive thanx again to Papalla for this rare pearl!

And as if this hasn’t been enough, here’s a video from 1982 (and not 83 as it says in the description), showing IMPACT live in Torino, playing in front of a not too interested, albeit highly interesting crowd. Some of the characters rather look like they had just jumped out of a Fellini movie, don’t they. So great to see how Hardcore Punk looked and felt when it still had a social relevance, bringing different people together and opening the windows for new music, new experiences for a few years (and some serious hair crime), before turning into a disposable pile of shite.

crazy crazy stuff! couldn’t agree more. declino and blue vomit and 5 bracio play some of the best hardcore from the 1983 period that I ever heard. it’s a shame really these bands are so unknown. but blogs like yours are probably going to change this forever.

  4. Nice one sir, although it seems there are many fewer comments on this one. Is it the lack of controversy or the 192kb/s? Acctually none of that is important just the fact that we have another quality post here to damage our ears. Loved the video, thanx again sir.

  9. I received it from Papalla under the title DISFORIA, but I’ve also seen the title “Torino 198x” when I was googling it. Currently, some people are doing a bit of archeology to dig up the original cover, but it hasn’t been dug up until now.

  14. Very right, Chano ;-)

I might be in Milano next week, Chano. Are there any record shops that I should visit? There’s one italian record that badly badly badly need still: The SKINS & PUNX 7″ comp. I somehow missed this constantly when it was still kinda easy to get through trading …..

Few comments, yeah Chano, same with Raptus, these people have a dubious taste ;)
I was glad to read that this comp was the same as Torino 198X because I was nerdily worried about missing info in my Italian archives that I thought were so complete, hahaha. Never found the tracklist though. Btw I had the data that the tape was released by the 5º Braccio’s Payhr label.
I haven’t heard it still because I follow Erich’s instructions not to listen to the stuff thru shitty computer speakers and, well, the process from downloading to toasting in my case has complications that no one cares about but me, haha
But I expect Kina to be great, their early stuff is very good. I found some time ago their 1992 LP Parlami ancora and it was horrible to my ears, tho I sent it to Joe Stumble and he said he liked it – ???
    Saludos :)

    Erich,
Milano sucks, the only good record shop we ever had was the mighty New Zabrinskie Point, run by Stiv Valli of TVOR fame. It was big like a stamp but with tons of incredible records in every corner.
Unfortunately it went out of business years ago!
Now I’ve been told Metropolis in Via Padova is a decent recordshop, but I still have to visit it so I cannot say if is a nice one or not.

  27. hello Lars,
no,the Blue Vomit collection cd was NOT a boot :-)
I released that cd by myself (officially) on F.O.A.D. records under permission of the band. It features all their tracks from tape compilations (‘Torino 198x’ and ‘ToriNoise’) plus two different live shows (from 1982 and 1983)+a 20 pages full color booklet.

It’s sold out now (maybe you can still find it on ebay if you’re lucky) but anyway I’ll repress it as soon as possible on vinyl (limited press) on F.O.A.D. records.

Anyway this comp. tape is called ‘Torino 198X’…’Disforia’ was just the name of the tapes label who released it (managed by Tax,later on guitar player in Negazione+more bands)

    cheers
    Marco
