THE WORST- Expect the worst 12″EP (Mutha Records, USA, 1984)

p1060689.JPGp1060690.JPGThis is a split post with the other best blog, Peter’s Killed by Death Records goldmine. Go there now and get a freshly re-ripped download of the first WORST 7″EP!

Sometimes, I seriously wonder how the building up of the music canon works. Sure, most of what’s considered to be classic from the golden years has its star in the HC Punk walk of fame for good reason. But how come that a record like this one never really got the credit it deserves? The second vinyl of New Jersey’s THE WORST absolutely destroys! And yes, it’s definitely better than the great first 7″, which was from 1982 and had a really distinctive sound for a HC recording so early. But, when you compare it to this, it’s kinda obvious, at least to me, that the band still wasn’t on top of its abilities. Brutal, relentless and extremely aggressive Hardcore of the not so funny kind, ready to rip your head open with top riffing, great tight musicianship (these guys sound like they’re actually holding themselves back here!) and a crisp powerful and clear production. Impossible for me to pick a fave track – they all sound like coming from one and the same mold!
This was recorded in 1983 and released in 1984 (the label states ’83 and btw, it also displays twice the same running time for the two songs that are glued together, “I don’t know” & “Going to New York”, tracks 3 & 4). It was produced by one of the most interesting record labels I know and one of my favourite ones at that – Mutha Records. What a fantastic label that was, with great variety and some really weird stuff. Damn, those were the days, but I’m sure you know that. Now move your furniture outta way, send your ladies out bowling & boozing and get ready for an adrenaline overflow! Greetings to the band’s guitarist Trez who’s still around and is a nice bloke.

Absolutely devastating stuff! Got the bootleg 7″ of this, but then got the CD re-issue with the 7″ & live ‘n’demo stuff. Very under-rated, indeed.

The CD is called “The Worst of The Worst” & is on the great Parts Unknown label. Should hopefully still be available. It includes rough mix tracks from an unreleased LP.

    Love it! GREAT beyond words!!!!!
Love it even more than the High Velocity 7″.

This might be blasphemous, but I think New Jersey almost had a better scene than NYC (Chronic Sick, Mourning Noise, THE WORST!), Ain’t it?

Hey man, how’s it going? My name’s Josh and I live in Orlando FL. I’m in a band called the RunnAmuckS and we’re huge fans of the Worst– we even name-dropped you guys on our second album on the thanks-page. On our first tour we played at the Brighton Bar in Long Branch, having no idea that it was one of the places you guys played. I started listening to you guys as a result of that tour– found a bootleg of Expect the Worst on 7″ and found out it was one of the greatest hardcore records of all time!!!!

Anyway, I’m flying to NJ on August 30th to see the Dictators NYC and I was wondering if any of you guys were gonna be there. It would be awesome to meet up with you dudes and have a beer. Alright, hope to hear from you soon! Rock ‘n Roll!

Been looking for some old Worst stuff for a while. Used to sit in Trezz’s basement getting wasted and listening to these guys rehearse. Crazy old days. BTW, itunes has the “worst of the worst” CD.

sometime in the late spring/early summer of 1983, I was a 13-year-old loser-kid in the middle of nowhere who spent his Saturday nights sitting in front of my dad’s stereo system, listening to & recording MRR Radio as it was broadcasted on one of the local college stations ( one night, they started the show with Tim Yo talking about these records he just got “From my old home state of New Jersey. But these bands are down from ‘The Shore’ . You know, ‘Down By The Shore'” and rambled on about how any band that ever played in Long Branch just talked about the kids going up on stage & beating up the bands cos that was what they knew about shows then; and also how hard to find these records were; even back then. played an entire Mutha set of Public Disturbance, Chronic Sick, Send Help, The Worst, etc for like 5 songs. all of it totally Kicked Ass!!! went to the local shopping mall a couple weeks later, and they had the 7″es by The Worst & Send Help in the “Import” bin (that’s how it was if you wanted good records back then!!!). I bought both of them, and eventually traded them for ‘million dollar’ Japanese things about 10 years later. I wish I could go back in time & keep those 2. such KILLER records that more than stand the test of time.
