What a nice blend of Death -, Thrash- and Black Metal! And what a band name – HELLPREACHER. You know this has to be great.
The band formed in San Antonio TX in 1985 and this demo is the only official release. Some of the band members involved in HELLPREACHER were also in bands such as ROTTING CORPSE (who sounded very familiar) or SOLITUDE AETERNUS (who were a great Doom Metal act).
“Resurrection” explodes with a simple, catchy as hell riff, before turning into some wicked good thrash. “Parricidal” is a bit of a drag, if you ask me, but “Inverted Crosses” again goes off with some major ferocity.
There’s not much more that I could tell you, and as always, feel free to fill us in. I first got a copy of this when I met Jason McMaster from WATCHTOWER in 1986. Back at home, I decided to contact the band for an original tape and I think (I would have to check that, but I’m too lazy right now) I featured the band in my fanzine too. Anyway, it’s a good, powerful blast, with quite a bit of aggression. Again, you can sense that someting was about to come and further radicalize guitar music in 1986.
Quote of the moment:
«What strikes me is the fact that in our society, art has become something which is related only to objects and not to individuals, or to life. That art is something which is specialized or which is done by experts who are artists. But couldn't everyone's life become a work of art? Why should the lamp or the house be an art object, but not our life?» (Michel Foucault)On heavy rotation:
An album full of diamonds and diamonds.Movie of the moment:
«Midnight in Paris» is not only the best Woody Allen movie in quite some time (although I must say that I loved «Matchpoint» for its cold bourgeois-brutality) – it can also be seen as a witty comment on the current retro-trend. And it's pure cinematic joy!Book of the moment:
It's a paradox: Blogs like this one disenchant the music that enchants their makers. The obscure, the magic, the mystery that was an integral part of popular music until a few years ago, has now been shattered completely. The internet and all its effect has torn down the boundary that used to separate the past from the present in the cultural production: Everything is only a few mouseclicks away, from music to art, fashion, design - you name it. The downside: Popular culture finally eats itself, is obsessed with its own past and thus creates nothing new. This is one of the main thesis of renowned music journalist Simon Reynolds' in his excellent book «Retromania. Pop culture's addiction to its own past». Reynold goes one step further and makes an interesting point saying that Punk itself was a reactionary cultural movement, dreaming of a world "without the Sgt Peppers album". A sometimes pretty academic, well written, resourceful and very much recommended book!Blogroll

Rotting Christ? You must meen Rotting Corpse, right? Anyway, if it´s Rotting Corpse you meen I must say I look forward to this one as they were great. Killer thrash in the Bonded by blood-style that I like so much. Will listen to this tomorrow and then I´ll get back.
And again, old demos die hard!
[Reply]
Yeah, Rotting Corpse. Bloody hung over. Haha
[Reply]
what really strikes me is the quality of your rips. how do you get such a clear sound??? i swear these mp3 sound better than my old 2nd gen. copy of this demo.
killer band btw.

another tape unearthed. Never heard this one.
[Reply]
Thanks. This is fucking sick. Never heard of them before. You should check out my band at myspace.com/TerroristThrash
I think you’ll like us. Thanks. Oh, Yeah the second song Parracidal doesn’t work or maybe it’s my crappy computer.

I always like to see people post obscure bands from Texas on their “music blogs.”
Admittedly, I don’t recall this band but I do remember Rotting Corpse playing gigs back in the day. My brother was more into metal than I was at that period in time so he would know more about these guys than I would. I’ll ask him about them and see if I can get more information your way.
I recall a gig in 1985-86 with DRI, Syranax, and some other band at The Ritz in Austin, TX around the time period that this Hellpreacher demo came out. It could very well have been Rotting Corpse. I’ll see if I can unearth the flyer and post it on my own blog along with a post of DRI’s first EP. Although, I hate saying stuff like that because it usually takes me fucking forever to follow through.

Were more Solitude Aeturnus members than John Perez in this band?
I’m still amazed to this day at Jason McMaster joing Dangerous Toys.

pretty great stuff. infernal thanks to our parents!!!

This one was great but I don´t get the track Parracide to work, is it just me or is there a problem with something on the blog?
I guess these guys have heard Slayer one or two times and I think that this is better than Rotting Corpse cause Rotting Corpse is a bit more polished, Hellpreacher has rougher edges and thats how I like my music.

sorry for posting again, but i just discovered your site, and am totally flippin’ out with all the old stuff! this is so awesome! i used to underground tape trade, and i still have some stuff in a box somewhere. i used to have a fridge box filled to the top with demos, but my step father tossed em out without telling anyone. that was 10 years ago and i still haven’t talked to him.
thanx,
anyway, i don’t know where else to post this question, so i hope it’s OK here…
do you have an demo by Venice, CA. band DECAPITATION called “Let the Killing Begin” ??? i have been searching for that ever since my step-dick toss out my tapes. i got that demo along with the Cryptic Slaughter “Life in Grave” (which if you have would be a great up, too!) & Excel demos (I used to trade with Les of CS) anyway, please contact me if you have help a me out

Thanks for the comments. It’s always nice to see so many comments came in over night
The link is fixed now, sorry bout that.
I never heard of a band called DECAPITATION, unfortunately. Needles to say, I would love to hear them. CRYPTIC SLAUGHTER demo is on this blog and both EXCEL demos are coming (ripped from the original tapes). Enjoy!

just recently discovered your blog and its OVERWHELMING! so many great and totally obscure bands punk or metal. the only problem I have with it is the sheer mass of quality. maybe you should think about splitting the blog up into two or more blogs at one point (tapes and metal seperated at least).
I would like to make a donation. how can I do so?
[Reply]
Frank: I thought about splitting the blog up too, but I came to the conclusion that I would rather keep it a little messy. Also, the original idea was spreading good (bad) music and also just documenting one particular guy’s (that’s me) musical history.
PS: For donations, you can use this email: erich at megawimp DOT com.

Chris,
Jason McMasters joining Dangerous Toys doesn’t seem half as funny to me as Billy White joining Dokken for a tour many moons ago.
It seemed strange to me that someone who once tried out to be a guitarist for Celtic Frost would wind up playing in Dokken instead.
[Reply]
Why does this seem strange to you? After all, Celtic Frost is the ultimate prostitute band.
[Reply]
it’s totally bizarre that these last comments would tie together two things I just discussed with my roommate a few minutes ago, as we watched a Ramones DVD.
A) that his brother bought Kerrang #1 off someone in Celtic Frost while living in Switzerland during the ’80′s
B) that he saw Don Dokken play a show with Accept’s bassist in his band, and joked about Dokken covering “Balls to the wall” before they went and did just that.

WOW! I can’t believe this demo is in an MP3 format on the web. I am Roger Gallardo, the guitarist on this demo. Just some history for everybody. When I formed Hellpreacher, I helped out a band called Valkyrie filling in on bass for about 5 shows opening up for Rotting Corpse and Watchtower. When Valkyrie recruited another bassist; Hellpreacher went into the studio and recorded the Ressurection demo. It’s too bad we didn’t record the rest of our songs. I think they were twice as good. They were like Destruction and Onslaught songs put together. We opened up for Rotting Corpse and Deathtripper. The other guitarist Danny Martinez (RIP) died in a car accident. That’s when we lost our ambition to play and split up. About a year later I joined Rotting Corpse in the summer of 1987 along with Louie Carrizales (Devestation & Death), and Mando Tovar (who replaced Steve Murphy for a few shows). While in Arlington Walt took me over to the Abbotts to borrow some equipment. There I met the greatest guitarist ever Diamond Darrell (RIP) and his brother Vinnie. In 1987 we played shows with Dark Angel, Overkill, Testament, Armored Saint, and Devestation. Afer the summer tour in Austin, San Antonio, Arlington, Corpus Christi, and McAllen; I quit Rotting Corpse because I couldn’t fully commit because of school. I still play today, my music isn’t as heavy or thrashy (still RAW), but I plan on re-recording all my original Hellpreacher songs. Be on the lookout for “Identify Friend or Foe”. Feel free to email me with any questions rjohng70@hotmail.com

Someone mentioned Decapitation in earlier postings…I got their “Let the Killing begin” demo 1985, Live radio, City Anaheim 30/07/85 and also “Bodily dismemberment” EP (that was released few years ago). Singer has ultra raw voice! I like it!
[Reply]
Maybe I am confusing facts but was not Hellpreacher featuring also Necrovore member? And I think one guy got killed in car accident in 1988 or so?
[Reply]
Henri,
I read that as well. One article said that our drummer Javier Villegas play with Necrovore, as Javier Milegas or something like that. I don’t think that is true, but I could be wrong. I don’t know about a death of any of the Necrovore band members.
All I know is that our guitarist from Hellpreacher Danny Martinez was killed in a once car accident in Dec of 1986.

I am Javier Villegas’s Son, and my father told me he was in Necrovore. He was as his name, not Javier Milegas. He was also a Hellpreacher member as you know. He is also alive and well.He still remembers you. We live in Texas still. Any information you would like to know about my father ill be happy to answer. I worship this kind of dirty Thrash/Death Metal and I’m amazed to see the cover art ! To make the story complete, here is a scan of the corresponding review from MEGAWIMP 1:

Hey, whatever happened to Disgust…they were a punk bank from McAllen or Edinburg I think…I saw them play with Vomit SPot a long time ago..man, those were the days! Skate or die…

Absolutely great and hilarious band and I really love the work your doin´ with this blog, so younger fans have the opportunity to hear this historical demo!
Robert Gallardo is talking about an new album containing the 1986 demo and some unreleased songs since 2008 on HELLPREACHER´s my space-site and I really hope, this material will be released in the nearest future, since the band was one the biggest influences in my life in the eighties.
Anyway, I took the opportunity by linking your blog on my site in order to spread the sound of the old days further more, because it deserves to be.
Greetings and keep it up!
