STILLBORN- Necrospirituals LP (Radium, Germany, 1989)

foto-222.jpgfoto-223.jpgBizarre, carnevalesque, gothic, kinky, satanic, operatic, kitschig, over the top, lustful and heavy – STILLBORN‘s debut album from 1989 remains one of Metal’s best kept secrets. Although this album is literally bursting out with talent, heavyness and a good sense of irony, it seems virtually unknown these days. Whot a shame! Time to give these swedish geezers some indecent exposure.
Although widely acclaimed as “Doom Metal”, this is of course not really the case here. Re-assembling bits and parts from genres such as Doomish Metal, Kinky Metal, Opera Metal, Mongo Rock, Motorcycle Punk and even with a slight touch of what those awful Turbojugend geeks would be enjyoing, STILLBORN create a highly original blend of Rock’n’Roll. The singer’s voice won’t be nw to fans of the mighty PERSONALITY CRISIS from Canada though – but honestly, the swedish version kicks more balls. The total standout track here is “Flesh for Iesus” (which I’d like to dedicate to Jesus Christ at this very occassion), of which a radio show version (possibly from a demo?) exists that, I must be honest to you, is so fucking heavy it blows the LP version out of the holy water (that was my first encounter with the band, by the way, found on a compilation tape I got from Per of FILTHY CHRISTIANS / PROTES BENGT – howdy Per!). “Calvaria 1939”, “Raising fits Cain”, “Angelynx” and “I, the Stillborn” make yu wanna fall onto your knees too – just freaking amazing!
So if you just wanna check out one track, try “Flesh for Iesus”. Enjoy this hard to find piece!

This is for Melanie.

Add: Lyrics to “Flesh for Iesus”. Gotta love that shit:

FLESH FOR IESUS

Underneath the sharpened scythe
Rich man call the cross
Run the gauntlet, noble son
Here’s flesh for Iesus

In the year of the hungry wolf
Bring us the head of the bourgeois whore
Headsman, headsman, feed the wolf
Breed the wolf
Iesus put his tongue to the gore

Overshadowed by his lord
Preacherman shall learn
Tongue the flames and kiss your Angel
Preacherman shall burn

In the year of the hungry wolf
Bring us the head of the bourgeois whore
Headsman, headsman, feed the wolf
Breed the wolf
Iesus put his tongue to the gore

I shall bring you down below
There where evil dwells and grows
Take my hand now, do not fear
Follow me, my sinful dear

So
Welcome down below
Where evil dwells and grows
Bow, your sinner
In the year of the fire

  4. P.S.: Musically this is incredible, and really fresh…BUT THE VOCALS FUCKING MURDER THE BAND IN IT’S CRIB ERICH!!! I can NOT lie, absolute GARBAGE!!! It’s just that the music is so damn well structured, and the production completely gave me an inner-sigh of nostalgia for “the old days”…BUT THE FUCKING VOCALS!!!

To me, STILLBORN is almost entirely about the vocals. Fucking incredible, gives the whole thing a sicklysweet feeling. Maybe you need to get used to it first?

  6. SwePete: It has been a re-release of the album but only on CD, never on vinyl. It was a copy of the CD out on Tradera a while ago but I didn’t win that auction. Bummer!! It seems like the CD-version is as hard2get as well and I sold my LP ’bout 10 yrs ago. Lead singer Kari can nowadays be found in the band Kidman. After Kari left the band they recruited another old punk-friend o’mine, Henke from D.N.A. And drummer Peter Asp later joined the fanatastic band Mary Beats Jane.
Awesome record, really nice post Erich!!

@Senappi. You are right as always. I´m writing out of mi arse as usual! For other readers I must say that Senap was not just part of the Gothenburg scene, He WAS the Gothenburg scene!!! Bara tjafs inget illa menat 😉 And that was a Freemason code. In case you wonder.

  9. I saw them in 89 at Bergslagsrocken and they were great. They even played a Nationalteatern song then.

Am I the only sick fuck who noticed this sounds exactly like RAHOWA “Cult Of The Holy War” (1993)? Clearly, George Burdi ripped this band off big time! Especially on that song “God Is Dead”. Thanks for this one–good stuff!

paleolithic! – thanks so much for posting this! these vocals cannot be beaten and i love the harmonica on streetsatan. the stench of sweaty leather permeates. “i live for no one, but i’ll die for you”. what a romantic.
    you’re my hero erich.

  12. Still one of my favorites. Actually Erich, I believe you’re the one who sent me a tape containing the better songs off this release. I found the record later on in a store in San Francisco. I didn’t know it had been released on cd – somebody should re-release it with bonus tracks – I’m curious to hear this radio show version of Flesh for Jesus. Aargh. And yes, the vocals are absolutely brilliant!!

  13. I’m pretty sure I read about this band in some metal fanzine back in the day. The vocals remind me of Sisters of Mercy, Laibach and Burning World era Swans. I really like this.

Like Black Sabbath hiring an angry Andrew Eldritch or Carl McCoy as vocalist… I’m just listening to the files while typing this message and I feel like… DOOMED!
Except when listening to “Street Satan”, which sounds… Er… Rock’n’Roll…
Well, you made me discover a great band!

Glad you guys enjoy this! It’s a fucking RIPPER of an album and it is to my deepest faith, that posting such albums will help a band / the reissues etc.!

I have a big smile on my face. This is absolutely wonderful. Thanks! An amazing band that never really got the appreciation they deserved. I was at the Hultsfred Festival in 1989 and of course had to see a band called Stillborn even though I never heard of them before. It was mindblowing. Beside all their own great songs they also played Boney M:s “Brown girl in the ring”. Imagine that song doom metal style, combined with Karis deepest base tones. Heaven! Unfortunately it’s impossible to describe it. If someone out there happen to have a bootleg of that gig please let me know!

    THIS. IS. AMAZING.

I actually remember seeing their demo on trade lists once upon a time but I never got it (you wouldn’t happen to have a copy would you?), and now I see i’ve been missing out for the better part of 20 years. God, it’s nice to hear imaginative doom metal with non-Ozzy vocals.

  20. I see Necrospirituals as the first pure gothic metal album ever. This is one of the most underrated classics. I was enough lucky to get this on vinyl, but it would be about the time to get this jewel re-released. Those who want to hear Kari’s voice, check his new band Kidman http://www.myspace.com/kidmanmusic
