KRIEG KOPF (“Warhead” translates as “Kriegskopf” in German) was a 2nd generation HC band from New York City that got semi-popular in 1985 to 1986, regularly playing local shows (at least that’s what my N.Y. flyer collection seems to be telling me). Other than that, the band’s only vinyl output was on the so-so “One big Crowd” LP comp (on Big City Records). In 86, this demo cassette got a favorable review in MRR, so I ordered it.
It’s not earth shattering, but a solid (almost) metal free midtempo HC cassette from the very last moments of the genre. “Immortal” is my fave pick here and “Work Song” reminds me quite a bit of “Never Work” from LOST GENERATION (also on this blog, if you only dig deep enough). I don’t think anybody outside New York City and Herisau has ever heard this, so let’s share this with you enthusiasts and completists.

Not bad! Liked Feast or Famine and Immortal. Gun Power is cool only cause they actually sing “Girl Power” in the chorus. Long live the Spice Kopfs.

This is a GREAT post. I’ve been wanting to hear more from these guys ever since I bought “BIG CITY’S: ONE BIG CROWD” comp like 20+ years ago..Can’t thank you enough.

didn´t sing billy milano to the song at the big city- comp? i remember it as the almost worst track on this rather shitty sampler. but nevertheless, great digging in deep record collections!
[Reply]
I’ll have to check that with Billy Milano singing when I’m at home, günther, but you’re right, the Krieg Kopf track on said comp. didn’t leave much impression (neither did the comp as a whole) – unlike the demo here.
[Reply]
Billy Milano was in the Psychos who´s on that comp at least. Don´t know if he did the vocals in that band though and can´t answer if he sang for Krieg Kopf.
[Reply]
Yep, Tomas. I happen to have a great, very raw PSYCHOS demo tape from 1984 (if memory serves) that I might rip someday. Milano sang there before S.O.D.
[Reply]
And the Psychos included Roger Miret as well if memory serves me right…
[Reply]
Is this the same Psycho we’re talking about?

Nopeli, Peterli – these are two different bands. The 12″ you had posted is a massive KILLER and better than anything else by both bands.

this was pretty darn great! More of this!

This is a pretty cool tape and the members look pretty cool too.

what bugs me, after all of these years, is the kids who claim to listen to motorhead but for the life of them will not listen to 1970′s ZZ TOP… there is such a connection between the two bands so wise up idiot kids! thank you to erich for this greatmusic here on the site!
[Reply]
70s ZZ Top is stellar but the 80s ZZ Top is commericial garbage and I’m sure Gibbons will agree with that.
[Reply]
zz top = garbage for gibbons with queen & dire straits records.
motorhead = best band ever.
[Reply]
Gibbons would outdone any Motorhead member on guitar so get the fuck out of here and besides Motorhead sounds the way they are because of punk rock!!!!
[Reply]
“Gibbons would outdone any Motorhead member on guitar” – I knew it Eddie, at heart, you’re a true metal fan.

Krieg Kopf is a blast from the past. They had a couple of decent songs and played a few decent shows… but Jason sold me some bullshit phony acid in the 8′s and ducked me for a long time.
[Reply]
what a fuckin surprise. thanks for posting our old tape. I have been trying to get this on my computer for years. I have two only tapes left. We the remaining ‘alive’ band members guitar, vocals, and drums are looking into releasing the album that never got pressed that was recorded in 88 and 89. Now that we have some money 25 years later. FYI:The bass player was shot to death by his girlfriend in the late 90′s. and Brendan knows I appologized to him for what I did back then. the flyers are now very time appropriate ‘War on Terrorism’ theme is popular now.

Thanks for the info, Jason! Curious to hear that unreleased LP. Let me know if you wanna share some tracks before releasing it.
[Reply]
All is forgiven Jason… just busting your chops. We’re cool. I’ll always remember you singing with Krieg Kopf at a CBGB matinee in 1985 on your birthday and you must have been pretty hung over because you pulled a chair up on stage and sang sitting the whole time. I thought that was awesome. Want a warhead, want a waread, win a war.

Finally got around to listening to this. This is fucking great! Thanks Erich!

I never heard the word Kriegskopf as a native German. I only know “Gefechtskopf” but I maybe Kriegskopf is correct too. I’m not so sure.
This is a really decent demo, thanks for sharing. I think I’m going to visit this site more frequently as you show some good taste + material.
[Reply]
That’s a good translation, Dennis (Gefechtskopf).

Admin, if you can facilitate contact between Mr.Deranged and myself I would be in your debt.

I thought I remember Milano telling me he played bass, and Billy Psycho sang…I might be wrong.
[Reply]
I too was a moron in this band. Glad to hear that some people actually liked us. Looking forward to hooking up with the old crew. Raise a glass to Hasty.

I’m so psyched for you Mark O! You really loved being in Kriegkopf, and here it is on the internet 22 years later – it sounds amazing!
[Reply]
I would love to write a note …….But…. I have to GET UP, GET OUT , AND GO TO WORK.

Hello guys
is there anyone out there interested in trading old hc tapes?
i’ve plenty of them but i want more!
[Reply]
wasn’t chris charuki in this band once?
he was also singing for cause for alarm on the bgk tour.
[Reply]
chris was never in the band, jason was the singer.
when he left perry from clenched fist was the best
replacemet, but he disappeared after a few practices.we broke up a few months later.
[Reply]
…wait. wasn’t the bassist Tim? was he the one who got shot?
[Reply]
Yeah, that was him.did you know him?
[Reply]
it’s okay. not my favorite demo but you know. urban waste is better though. i just think the music could be a little faster.
[Reply]
Hell yes! I grew up listening to this frickin’ shredding, solid, angst-stricken beauty! NYHC! Right along side Jason and the boys.. matinees at CB’s, etc. The music of Krieg Kopf DEFINED what NYHC was all about. New York. Blue collar. Real. Pissed. Current. Period. I’m 45 now, but when I just heard this again, I was 18 again for a minute! THIS is the shit right here! jfavorite3@yahoo.com
