First off: Big sorry for not posting something new sooner. I’m currently drowning in work. And while we’re at it: comments and emails asking for “upload this and upload that” (most of them don’t even say “please”) will be ignored.
So here we have some boyscout shit finally. I don’t know, tell me what you want, but whatever Choke was involved with turned out to be musically great – NEGATIVE FX, SLAPSHOT,, some STARS & STRIPES and LAST RIGHTS. What a force majeure this 7″ is! It rolls over you like a fucking engine. Amazing!!! You know the rule of thumb, don’t you: Good people make good music – dumb people make great music. Here’s proof.
Depicted find the infamous “Hitler sleeve” variation of which supposedly 100 were made – plus the “promo sleeve” that came with a portion of these. Rare shiat. And I included another variation from my personal collection which is rarely seen (below).
As a bonus, I’ll throw in DINOSAUR JR’s cover version of “Chunks”, taken from the “Just like Heaven” one-sided 12″. Enjoy, bastards.
Quote of the moment:
«What strikes me is the fact that in our society, art has become something which is related only to objects and not to individuals, or to life. That art is something which is specialized or which is done by experts who are artists. But couldn't everyone's life become a work of art? Why should the lamp or the house be an art object, but not our life?» (Michel Foucault)On heavy rotation:
An album full of diamonds and diamonds.Movie of the moment:
«Midnight in Paris» is not only the best Woody Allen movie in quite some time (although I must say that I loved «Matchpoint» for its cold bourgeois-brutality) – it can also be seen as a witty comment on the current retro-trend. And it's pure cinematic joy!Book of the moment:
It's a paradox: Blogs like this one disenchant the music that enchants their makers. The obscure, the magic, the mystery that was an integral part of popular music until a few years ago, has now been shattered completely. The internet and all its effect has torn down the boundary that used to separate the past from the present in the cultural production: Everything is only a few mouseclicks away, from music to art, fashion, design - you name it. The downside: Popular culture finally eats itself, is obsessed with its own past and thus creates nothing new. This is one of the main thesis of renowned music journalist Simon Reynolds' in his excellent book «Retromania. Pop culture's addiction to its own past». Reynold goes one step further and makes an interesting point saying that Punk itself was a reactionary cultural movement, dreaming of a world "without the Sgt Peppers album". A sometimes pretty academic, well written, resourceful and very much recommended book!Blogroll

This EP is pure Boston HC at it’s best!!

This may be my favorite Boston HC single – ferocious shit. And the line ‘dumb people make great music’ is spot on.
My buddy had the Hitler sleeve, I had to settle for the standard cover. Bastard.

this has been reissued recently with some extra tracks. great post nonetheless for the cover shots alone. youre my hero.

Thank you so, so much for making all this great stuff available!

The recent 12″ reissue on Reflex Records (Belgium) is fucking amazing. Has 4 extra tracks.

Being a prick as he might be, it’s undeniable that Choke did some ripping shit with both Negative Fx and Last Rights. I truly think (and that’s a personal statement) that it stands the test of time much better than DYS or SSD when dealing with boyscout HC.
I think that Slapshot sucks, though.

Is it just me or does the opening riff in “Chunks” sound a lot like the riff in “youth camp” by Necros ?
[Reply]
Necros were the most overrated HC band and Corey knows it. That’s why he will never reissue the records.

I gotta disagree with you guys sayin this is the greatest Boston HC 7inch ever. Side A is good if you can ignore the lyrics but Side B is kinda weak. Gimmee Deathwish “Tailgate” or Gang Green’s “Sold Out” or The Freeze’s “Guilty Face” over this any day. Shit, I even like “Laughing All The Way To The Cleaners” more than this.
Not saying I hate it. In the right mood “Chunks” is pretty entertaining. Just questioning it’s “crucial-ness”.
Erich – thanks for posting the 7inch covers by the way. I never got to look close-up at the back of the Hitler cover before. “Recorded in the ovens of Auschwitz” — man, what tha fuck was Choke thinking with this 45?
…oh and The Necros were a great band. The “Sex Drive” and “IQ32″ 7inches suck but “Conquest For Death” is a friggin sledgehammer of an LP.

Joe, of Last Man’s fame…
That’s right, the Necros were a really good band, at least they put out a consistent Lp (that one you mention), and that’s not something that can be said about every Reagan era Hardcore band out there, ain’t it?
I’m not crazy about Choke (this is himself at his best), but I still think NegFx and LR are better than the much more praised SSD. I just can’t go with Springa’s vocals; It’s not like everyone should sing as well as HR or Glenn Danzig he sounds like he’s being constipated for weeks and finally managed to shit!
[Reply]
I have been picking up on this big SSD backlash for a while. People keep talking about how over-rated the LPs (esp The Kids Will have Thier Say) are. Now The Necros are going thru the same sort of revisionism.
Whats funny is that both of these bands were, a few years back, fetching some pretty extreme prices on eBay. Back then, the hype was totally in the other direction.
The truth is both SSD and the Necros were solid bands. Thier records should never have sold for 100′s of dollars but at the same time, they both are pretty crucial bands in the development of HC and had some great songs. Conquest For Death especially has some seriously impressive shit on it.
Totally agree that Springa sounds constipated. What is funny about that is that his style was very influential with singers like Ray Cappo and that style became very popular in the late 80′s in the NYHC scene.
I used to think of that style as rigid and authoritarian but really…it was constipation!

hi erich,
chunks by dinosaur jr. is one of the few tracks i dwnldd from your blog. may i take the liberty to propose one or two posts?
despite what is written above i’d very much apreciate quality rips of IQ32 and the Bored Youth 7″. Also i’ve been looking for Neon Christ 7″ but haven’t been lucky.. yet?
take care – theun_k

Springa’s vocal style sounds constipated? Hmm. Nah! It sounds like he is shredding his vocal cords…its beautiful.
