CONFUSE- Nuclear Addicts Flexi 7"EP (Blue Jug Records, Japan, 1984)

CONFUSE from Japan were the shit back in the day. Their records, particularly this Flexi Disc, were hard to find and there was some kind of aura shining around them. No wonder, since especially this babe still stands up there in the glory hall of primitive distorted noise (pdn). What else can you say? That they probably gave their DISORDER records some good spinnin’ before recording this? That their musical talent shows in the enigmatic emblem of no talent? That the guys looked like a bunch of postcard punks? That all of this doesn’t matter now, nearly a quarter of a century later, and we can just sit back and enjoy the beautiful brutality of CONFUSE?

One more thing. Dig, founder of Earache Records, one day in 1985 had the glorious idea of recording two songs on a cheap cassette tape, one each from OUTO and CONFUSE and renaming them (“Disaster” from CONFUSE became “(Charles Manson is) Innocent” and “I like Cola” was re-titled “I like killing”). Then he called the “band” WEREWOLF CHAOS (or was it ANTICHRIST?) and started putting the tape in the international traders pipe. It didn’t take long and the tape was on every list throughout the world and many people thought of it as the new hot shit.
But that’s not the funniest thing about it. Soon after this, a friend of mine wrote CHARLES MANSON IS INNOCENT in BIG white dripping letters on his black leather jacket, and below that – WEREWOLF CHAOS. I still smile when I think of it and worse – I will always hear “Innocent” and not “Disaster”.

PS: Another great idea, a german friend of mine had, was to record DISCHARGE’s “Hear nothing” LP on 45rpm and sending it on tape, with a neatly made cover and a band name I unfortnately forgot to some fanzines. You wouldn’t believe it, but the tape got some good reviews.

Haha, now that’s total confusion. Genocide Association were rumored to be from Florida, weren’t they? Curse it was a hoax, but was it the robin hood boys?? That’s new to me.

Genocide Association fooled me at the time I have to admit, but they did play at least the one show. I have some photos to prove it….

Not that I wouldn’t take your word on this, Paul – but how would photos prove it? Haha. Anyway, would love to see em since I’m a voyeur of some sort.

there must have been something in the water in japan. incredible!

let me say thanks for this and for your blog. i first thought the idea of not following a well defined musiccal concept (like kbd and powerpop pearls on kbd records and crap on 7inch punk etc) would ruin the blog. you proved me wrong. though you’re jumping fast sometimes (today we’ve had it all from typical hc to mod / punk to this noise attack) the whole thing HAS a concept in some mysterious way. think it’s the experience you get after so many years. may i ask for some more japanese hc before my tongue gets even browner? 😀

Yes this is some classic record! And I daresay a classic post.

Back in the early 90s, me and a friend also did a little bit of hoaxing…or almost. We recorded some really crap crust sounds on taperecorder in his room and the tape came with extensive innersnotes (ultra cliche and overthetop lyrics etc), pictures of guys with 10 meter mohicans and Cal from Discharge ripoffs etc etc as well as of course a grand Crass-ish poster etc. The plan was to get on some Jap compilation but I think in the end we never actually sent it anywhere…I think…can’t remember.

    Ha!

Yeah it was ANTICHRIST, not Werewolf Chaos. The story behind Antichrist is confusing, as the band did exist at some point (they had two songs of the “Diminished Responsibility” comp LP alongside Heresy and a few bad UK speed metal bands). Heresy/Unseen Terror members were involved, I believe.

Right – now I got the pieces together. Antichrist was the band’s name and yes, at some point Antichrist became a project band with Mitch (Unseen Terror, just before he joined Heresy) and Kalv (Heresy). I have some rehearsal recordings / demo stuff at home. That’d be a nice idea of posting such material. One should maybe start a new blog for such things, kinda like a genealogical project that captures the birth of the hc/grindcore bastard.

So ridiculous it is funny! Bad english, stupid fashionable look, superficial music. What a gimmick! Bought some Confuse records from the crappy Revoltation label in 1991 and haven’t stop laughning since. What a racket!

Domo Arigato! I always had a soft spot for this kind of distorted mayhem. Brings a smile to my face and a fist in the air(empty handed YKWIM)
Disorder sure had their share of clones in Japland, Dustnoise being a prime example. Hilarious!

    What did I miss?
This sounds incredibly dramatic, (the war of words betweeen Erich and Peter).
I have come to view the record blogs as my radio, so this is like a fued between disc jockies.
I ain’t taking sides, but I’m curious as to what exactly is going on here.

To Erich, post more Japcore! MORE MORE MORE! The masses demand it!
ESPECIALLY LSD, Confuse, and More G.I.S.M. especially M.A.N.!
Maybe the She Killed Vicious 7 inch.
BUT PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE if you have the LSD (Destroy Flexi) post it!
