NO ALTERNATIVE- s/t 7" (Subterranean Records, USA, 1980)

“You say that you want to change the world, so you go out on the street and smoke your dope, You tell me all your hippie problems, you tell me that you just can’t cope” –

Fucking amazing HEAVY anti-cop punk shit from San Francisco’s NO ALTERNATIVE. It’s a pity they only had this 7″ and the compilation tracks on “SF Underground” and “Not so quiet on the western Front”, cause there obviously was a lot of potential in the band. Great guitar licks, making this sound more like a Posh Boy’s release, much like the darker songs by AGENT ORANGE, I think. The outro with the cop is the only “funny” moment here.
Anybody knows why it says “Backtracks” on the front cover? Is this the records title?

No Alternative are back playing in the San Francisco area. I have heard of a live cd at the Mab and a new cd of new material.

It only took one listen to “Make Guns Not Love” to put it amongst my favorite punk songs. Great anti-hippie lyrics, some cool guitar lines in the intro too. I don’t really care for the other two tracks, but oh well. “Guns” more than makes up for it. Great post.

There is some pretty good footage of No Alternative playing Rockabilly Rumble in a video that came out in somewhere in the 80′s, called Underground Forces 2. It’s been a long time since someone ripped it off, but if I’m not mistaken it was on Target Video with stuff like Flipper, Dez era Black Flag, Weirdos, etc

Always liked Make Guns… a lot. Seems so underrated. How come? Maybe cause it was literally everywhere in the 80s? The record not the song.

Make Guns not Love for America, is just what I needed. One of the greatest punk songs of them all.

I would love to see how some of the local hippie-punks would react to this. In particular the horrid gonorheal “Appalacian Terror Unit” who have a walking yeast infection for a vocalist.

I think the voice of the cop is Dirk Dirsen(sic?) who promoted shows for the early S.F. Punk bands at the Mab(Mabuhay club/restaurant).He passed away recently .

The No Alternative “Johnny Got His Gun” CD came out in late ’99 on Wingnut Records out of Berkley, California. It has a ton of unreleased studio and live stuff and has some real killers on it! The Wing Nut label used to have a website but I don’t think it’s working anymore. If you want a burn of it contact me off-list at azupop@yahoo.com.
