BULLDÖZER- Fallen Angel, c/w Another Beer (is what I need) 7" (selfproduced, Italy, 1984)

Re-post from April 3 2006. MP3 files added for educational reasons.

Italys BULLDÖZER 7″ from 1984 is what I call a genuine copy (of VENOM and MOTÖRHEAD). I remember when it came out, a local record store had a few copies of it and everybody was trying to get one. BULLDÖZER were doing the right thing at the right time – metal and HC kept getting closer and so it was only logical when I saw BULLDÖZER live in Milan shortly after, sharing the same bill with NEGAZIONE, DECLINO and some other HC bands. What a marvellous gig that was! A.C. Milan, BULLDÖZERS singer, played bass too but they couldn’t find a microstand for him in the squat, so some dude held the micro for him during the gig. In the other he kept a bottle of beer that was being replaced with a new one in increasing tempo.
The two songs here are equally good – basically built around one riff that sounds so perfectly like VENOM on “Welcome to hell”, it’s criminal. Relentless power and that kind of very crude brutality that most kids of today wouldn’t probably even recognize as such with their full of pro-tools bullshit.
The band had some more releases of which I only have the first LP (“The Day of wrath”). Nothing comes close to this 7″ though.

This glorious platter has been repressed in 2001 in a limited edition of 1000 copies with a new “improved” (hahaha) backcover.
If memory serves right, there were two pressings of the original version. Anybody knows more about this?

Addendum: Here’s the back of the repress – enjoy the boys in full color!

I’m going to guess you have the original back cover scanned and posted which makes me wonder how it possibly could have gotten any better???? Maybe the upside down cross, devil horns, and sweet ’stache weren’t displayed prominently enough????

Wow… the etching from Dante’s Inferno, the ‘we’re so fucking metal’ back cover… unreal. Tunes are OK (I’ll take my Motorhead straight up, thank you)… but the package is off the charts. Good Bad Cover Art for Good Bad Music. Genius.

And remember Timmy, don’t forget to tell your mother “SATAN, SATAN, SATAN…”

Yes this is classic Italian metal! I didn’t discover this until the 90’s as in the 80’s I hated metal as all I ever heard was the shit bands of that era and was more into anarchy and rebellious punk (haha). This is total Venom worship no doubt. I always wondered why there were not enough Venom copy cats jumping their bandwagon during that time. I am interested to hear any Venom sounding bands of the mid and early 80’s. Day Of Wrath is their best album, especially the song “Madman” with that killer lead guitar work.

  13. Erich wrote:

Glad you dug this for one reason or another (malfeitor: will post the alternate backsleeve, haha, it’s all so unreal).

Yeah Tom, for once I agree with you: It’s a shame there weren’t more Venom type bands around. Will contemplate about possible more in the vein during my daybreak walk. The first Hellhammer demo tried to come pretty close too but I think it never was the same really. Then there the fab MEDIEVAL who sounded more like early Motörhead.

Regarding this post I think you shall rename this blog to: Good Times For Bad, Bad Music! Looking forward to the name change(and the sex change). I’ve already updated the name in my link section so don’t you worry.

When it comes to Venom copy-cats, I agree there were not as many as you’d expect, BUT there were tons of bands influnced by Venom. The bands from the early to mid-80’s that were pure Venom-worship were N.M.E., Onslaught and Warfare.

But other Venom-ish bands were Bathory’s 1st LP (perfect copy of Black Metal-era Venom), Poison from Germany, Sodom’s 1st EP, Possessed. Err, VoiVod’s “War And Pain” LP ?

  17. fred wrote:

This larm guy pegged the Venom copies perfectly. Hey, that guy in N.M.E. that stabbed and killed his mom is out of prison and recording NME again, isn’t he? That NME lp was a crazy rekkid.

Italian Venom copy… and on the back… I see no thanks to Death SS? What’s up with that? Death SS were way more evil, since they had like werewolves and mummies and shit.

  18. Erich wrote:

Yes, of course – N.M.E. were THE Venom copy band and also that first BNATHORY lp sounded like “Black MEtal” ear Venom (though the guy always claimed he didn’t even know Venom when this was recorded, haha). But as an expert in that field, I must say that Death S.S., Possessed, Sodom, Poison or VoiVod didn’t sound at all like Venom (except for Possessed’s “Death Metal” tune which blatantly ripped off “Black Metal by Venom). Sure, all these bands were influenced or just came at the same time, but musically, they were in a different league.
I’ll post the first N.M.E. demo soon, it’s way better than the LP and Kurt was a penpal of mine before he “disappeared” all of a suddden … more on that later.

Fuck all the copy-cats, Venom were pure black magic channeled from the abyss of darkness and will NEVER be repeated.
That said Bulldozer come the closest.
Drink your whiskey, cry out blasphemies and listen to Venom, Bulldozer, Bathory,
NME (and all the other hell rockin’ black metal) til’ death !

According to my information this original 2 track EP was released only once back in 1984. Back in 80s Bulldozer did not have success and this is how I managed to get MINT copy in 1999 from friend of Bulldozer guys. I know that in the beginning of 90s some Mexicans did 3 track bootleg EP (w/ different and cheap cover). And in the beginning of 2000 smth Warlord re-released the EP.

Did you know that the man behind Bathory is the now famous video director Jonas Åkerlund? He’ve made videos for Madonna, Metallica etc etc. And with that said I have to confess that I once played in an early swedish black metal band ha ha ha.

Yeah but the man behind the Bathory was Quorthon. The other musicinas were not very stable. I think 1 guy from Driller Killer played also in Bathory for some time (drummer).
