V/A TAKE IT! MAGAZINE- 7" Flexi Disc Compilation (Wake the Dead, USA, 1982)

Surprisingly, there weren’t that many cases of censorship in Punk and HC music over all those years and thousands and thousands of songs and records with quite a bit of potential. Remember Mykel Board’s saying of “how much Punk Rock do you hear in Russia?”. Though this quote is a bit out of context here (as it was when he used it), it still shows how liberal and “free” post-cold war societies of the western world had become- no Reagan, thatcher or Kohl administration nor the PMRC could turn back the wheels of time. Or was it the other way round and that shows how petty and harmless Punk seemed to the leaders and the judiciaries?

This 7″ Flexi comp however contains one of the few “beeped out” Punk songs in history. Right now, only germany’s SLIME come to mind when thinking about other acts of censorship on records (not talking about Evatones traditional practice of messing around with publishers, as was the case with A.O.D./BEDLAM split that in the end was released on hard vinyl instead of flexi). Are there more that slipped my mind?
Funny enough, Evatone cut out a few nasty words from ANGRY SAMOANS “Steaknife” and forced the publishers to alternate the DEAD KENNEDYS song title on the tracklist (see scan below with a publishers note about the actual censorship) – but is there anything as subversive and corrupting as a FLIPPER song???? “Quand le doigt montre la lune, l’imbécile regard the doigt” as the french situationists said in Paris in 1968 ….. (“When the finger points to the moon, the imbecile looks at the finger”).

What is alos great about this is that at least the DK and SAMOANS songs seem to be alternate versions, not available on the respective LPs – have they been re-released ever since?
The last song, seemingly a kid singing and playing with his dad maybe, doesn’t appear on the tracklist.
The whole magazine, a newspaper sized tabloid print, is a precious. Lots of great stuff in there, pix, ads, interviews – priceless!

FLIPPER: The Game’s got a Price.mp3
ANGRY SAMOANS: Steaknife.mp3
ANGRY SAMOANS: Lights out.mp3

Here’s the scan of the aforementioned “Setting the record straight”:

PS: 7Inchpunks ugly practice of deleting Peter KBD and mine comments about the shit quality of some (the majority) of the rips they have there, made me think about “censorship” on Punk records. Though the term “censorships” is of a delicate nature and I myself wouldn’t take a pro- or anti-standpoint in this question (it’s the context that counts, as always). Anyway, that’s how I remembered I had this Flexi.

classic punk-rock-censorship: “asylum” on “the feeding of the five thousand” by crass where small wonder records pressed just 2 minutes silence instead of music. also that “god save the queen” by the sex pistols was deleted from the official record charts, not to mention pressing plants refusing to print their records and sleeves. also german band luzibär were sued because they said on their record “geistig 7″ that someone was an asshole (file:///D:/webs/hausseite/ndw/sounds/sounds6.htm) but i don’t know if they finally lost that case.

A note: Thought I haven’t “complained” about shit quality as mush, I’m not as picky as Erich, I’ve posted relevant links in the comment section . And funny enough not one of them have ever left a comment on the KBD blog ha ha. And just look at Grumpyoldpunks latest post where he states he’s a KBD collector nerd. With that said it’s strange that he dosen’t come to our site to share information etc.

Dickies 45 of Sounds of Silence has the f-word bleeped, the one with I’m OK on the flip.

This flexi came out before Back From Somoa, and after the Queer Pills. ‘Member laughin’ my ass off when it came out. Was much cooler than what the DKs had become.

Saw the Somoans a bunch around this time, once with Jeff Dahl singin, onna bill with the Urinals and the VKTMs at one of the Vexs.

7inchpunk.com also deleted one of my comments for a reason I have yet to understand. (No one explained it to me, though contact info is required before you get an acct./post comments).

It was mainly a positive comment about their post of Amebix’s “Winter,” and I noed the discussion in the comments turned to Killing Joke. So I said, yeah, I love Amebix, love this release 7inchpunk.com posted, and love kIlling Joke. FYI, here is an mp3 that reminds me of Amebix,b ut it’s by Killing Joke. Then I had a link to it.

My guess is maybe they considered it spam or something? have no idea. But, yep, deleted.
