THE HUGH BEAUMONT EXPERIENCE- The Cone Johnson E.P. 7" (Cygnus Records, USA, 1981)

Ever since I first heard HUGH BEAUMONT EXPERIENCE on the “Cottage Cheese from the Lips of Death” compilation LP and heard of their impossibly rare 7″, I was looking for the gemm. Living in the Kingdom of Sweden, a couple of thousand miles away from where “it” happened (here, you must whisper, in true Really Red style, “in Texasss”), it wasn’t all to easy to track it down.
I’m sure y’all have heard the stories about how it comes this record is so rare. It’s a shame really cause it features some very nice amateurish whacky Punk! My picks would be the first track and “Money means so much to me”, although the lyrics to “Zyklon B” keep pissin me off constantly. “Talking to Mister Goebels last week, had the nerve to call me a freak, he said that I was a subhuman, said this time he’s gonna stop me.” Where does this disturbing and idiotic identification of Punks with jewish people in ns-germany come from?
Well, let’s get funny again. Hahahoho. The posthumous LP “Virgin Killers” is much, much better than this 7″. The A-side features the bands demo tape, produced by Bob Mould and the B-side a hillarious live concert. “Existential Vacuum” also re-released parts of this 7″ together with previously unreleased material on a 7″. Unfortunately, both of them were pretty limited and seem to be quite difficult to track down. Let me know in the comments if the LP would be a good choice of good bad music.

The sleeve you see up there is extremely rare. It was handcolored by me. And sorry for the crackling – my copy is pretty beat up.

Wonderful just wonderful! Have been wanting to hear this for YEARS! It may piss you off but these guys weren’t academics. Wasn’t it you who said it takes idiots to make great music? LOL – YOU WERE DAMN RIGHT!

Hearing this for the first time I must say I’m very dissapointed. I heard the “Virgin Killers” LP and that one smokes. It lacks energy. Sounds like they’re hold back by someone in the studio. Money… is decent, at best.

Thanks so much for posting this! Although the ep is a bit dissapointing, it’s still great to get the chance to hear it without paying hundreds and hundreds for it. Great blog with amazing music.

God, I’ve thought this EP stunk since I first heard it years ago. A total letdown. The only reason anyone remembers this mediocre EP is because it was so stupidly rare and hyped up– that’s why I was curious to hear it way back when. If this record had a lot of copies pressed it would be on noboy’s want list. Songs like “Money Means So Much To Me” make me turn off the stereo. Yuck! The later Hugh Beaumont stuff like on the “Virgin Killers” LP is much better.

Why do you than somebody for taking interest in punk from the region where you come from (and way over 20 years old!)? Weird!

i went into a rage hearing this again after so many years. such memories it brings back to me of being a teenage hellion. it reminded me of my old ex girlfriend mandy who tried to kill me with her pink switchblade and bumming beer money from strangers on the streets of tennessee

My name is Tommie Duncan and I was the original guitarist for the Hugh Beaumont Experience back when I was 15…we cut that EP in 3 hrs at a small studio in Arlington, TX and we had only been together as a band for about one month…the first airplay was on The Rock and Roll Alternative hosted by George Gimarc the following Sunday…I also played on the live side of the Virgin Killers LP, which was a gig at the now defunct Bowie Theater in Ft Worth, TX (hometown for us). The studio side however features a guy named David McCreath on guitar as I left the band when they decided to move to Austin, TX…Jeff “King” Coffee (best know as the drummer from the Butthole Surfers), played on both sides of the Virgin Killers LP but was not with the band when we did the original EP…the drummer at that point was Carter Kolba…Coffee was to join the band about 5 months later…Cool to see this stuff is still around!!! I myself live in BKK, Thailand and still play guitar a bit!

Great info Tommy – thanks a lot! Can you tell us more about the reasons for the scarcity of the 7″?

  18. Anonymous wrote:

    Erich,
Scarcity is due to the fact we only pressed 500 of them…
