CIVIL DISSIDENT- First Blood 7"EP (No Master’s Voice, Australia, 1985)

Some people find songs like “First Blood”, Capitol Punishment’s “Jody is my bloody Love” or The Fix’s “Signals” too long – I always found them way too short! CIVIL DISSIDENT were Australias most acclaimed HC band of the mid 80s. Next to this 7″ (of which 500 were made), the band had songs on two LP comps, “Cleanse the Bacteria” (plus one extra on the bonus 12″ that came with the mailorder version of it) and “Eat your Head”, a great Double-LP comp (and one of the few records I’m still very much after, btw). Somewhen in the 90s, a U.S. label released a great discography LP which also had Demo tracks and stuff, all in good sound and fully legitimated by the band.

Dave Ross, the drummer and skateboard-pro, stayed a few days at my place when I still lived at my parents in 1986 (?). I remember when I walked through the nearby town with him, he totally freaked out over the architecture of the 19th century buildings, not for aesthetic reasons though but for the fact that they had a lot of edges and stuff which he used for doing skateboard tricks, haha. Whenever I wandered through the city after that, I noticed these spots and although I’ve never been a skater, I had a different view on houses ever since. Dave would travel on to the UK where he built up a fanzine, “Future Now!”, together with John and Kalv from HERESY. Although the zine was an ambitious project, it never came further than the great first issue with its free 7″ Flexi (STUPIDS, DEPRAVED and HERESY songs). Oh well, memory lane.

Here are the first 2 of 3 tracks for download. Enjoy.

As always Erich I love to kiss your ass. So this time is no exception. It’s a great piece of Aussie HC. But what I love most about this post is your excellent writing.

Hey Erich, Dave Ross here. Thanks for the nice compliments re the band’s music. A new compilation with ALL material and some live stuff is in the works and will be released sometime soon. I am humbled at the number of comments posted around the world about Civil Dissident. I had to laugh at your remarks about the “skateworthiness” of buildings! 7 x dislocated shoulder later (last one a year ago) l had to hang up the board. By the way, l just did an interview for the ‘Future Now’ fanzine. I did however do a fanzine called ‘Object Dismembered’ and Australia’s first skateboard ‘zine called ‘Perfect Transition.’ Eat Your Head is available on CD these days. Get in touch with Scotti from Missing Link Records in Melbourne – there is a website, etc. Take care. David

Hi Dave – nice to hear from you after all these years! Hope you’re doing fine and all and can’t wait to hearing that new CD compilation. How about digitizing some of the live video footage of CD you used to have?
